Scotiabank Hockey 24

The Challenge

Scotiabank—together with their agency The Mark—wanted to amplify the conversation around community, culture, and hockey in Canada. They wanted to make a film that demonstrated Scotiabank’s involvement in hockey across the country, both on and off the ice. The challenge was to create a first-of-its-kind feature-length documentary about community hockey in Canada that was entirely filmed in a single day.

The Solve

At Hot Docs Studios, we like being involved in every stage of production. We started the process by working with the team at The Mark through the themes and the structure of the movie. Our team of researchers worked with the agency to find original stories from across Canada that would help the film come to life. In the end, we presented over 150 stories to the client.

The Solve

Once the stories were whittled down, we worked with the agency to pair the best directors—hand-picked from our extended roster of world-class filmmakers—and preferred crew members with stories from coast to coast to coast. We then juggled the complex logistics that went into filming in seven locations in different parts of the country at the same time. The end result was a 90-minute movie—that was sweet (but not overly so), heartwarming, sad, happy, uplifting, and, most of all, fun to watch—that aired nation-wide on Sportsnet to over 500,000 households and screened for free on the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival website.
